Houston Roof Replacement: What You Need to Know Before You Decide
When Does a Houston Home Actually Need a Roof Replacement?
Most homeowners come to us after a storm, or after they’ve had a leak repaired three or four times and the problem keeps coming back. Both of those are legitimate reasons to have a replacement conversation — but they’re not the only ones.
The RCC approach starts with an inspection, not a recommendation. Before we discuss replacement, we want to know what we’re actually dealing with. That means getting on the roof, documenting every slope, and giving you an honest read on whether you need maintenance, repair, or replacement. Most roofing companies lead with replacement because that’s where the revenue is. We lead with the inspection because that’s what earns your trust.
The Five Roof Types We Install in Houston
Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material in the Houston market — and for good reason. They’re cost-effective, widely available, and when installed correctly, they perform well in our climate. RCC installs Owens Corning, CertainTeed, and TAMKO products under contractor certifications that carry extended manufacturer warranties.
Metal roofing performs exceptionally well in Houston’s hail and wind environment. Standing seam metal handles impact events better than most asphalt systems and has a lifespan that often exceeds 40 years. The upfront cost is higher — typically $600 to $900 per square installed — but the lifecycle cost relative to repeat replacements is a different conversation.
Tile roofing (concrete and clay) is popular in higher-end residential areas throughout The Woodlands, Kingwood, and west Houston. We’re a Brava Preferred installer — Brava’s synthetic tile products give you the look of slate or cedar without the weight or maintenance requirements.
Cedar and slate are specialty installations. Synthetic alternatives like Brava Cedar Shake offer comparable aesthetics with better durability and impact ratings. Slate is a lifetime roof when installed correctly, but the substrate, structure, and flashing work require a different skill set than standard shingle installations.
The RCC Installation Standard
Every RCC roof replacement includes details most contractors in this market skip. Every roof is hand-nailed — no pneumatic guns — which means nail placement is controlled and consistent on every shingle. We detach and reset gutters on every job, allowing us to remove the old drip edge completely and reset gutters fastened to the fascia rather than through the drip edge, which is how fascia rot starts. We use 2×4 drip edge — the only size that covers the full 2 inches of decking required by code. EPDM rubber-gasketed flashings secured with screws and washers rather than nails that back out under Houston’s temperature cycling.
What a Replacement Actually Costs in Houston
Asphalt shingle replacements on a standard Houston residential roof typically run $450 to $750 per square installed. An average 25-square roof comes in between $11,000 and $19,000 fully installed. Insurance-covered replacements follow a different path — the carrier’s estimate and your contractor’s scope need to align, and supplements for concealed conditions discovered during tear-off are handled separately.
If you’re unsure whether your roof qualifies for an insurance claim, our RCC Forensic Damage Assessment answers that with a 14-section documented report — not a phone photo and a verbal recommendation. If you’re in Conroe, Spring, The Woodlands, New Caney, Kingwood, or the broader Houston area, start with the inspection. Schedule yours here.
