Gutter Styles for Houston Homes: What Works and What to Ask About

Most Houston homeowners replace gutters because the existing ones are failing — not because they’ve thought through which system is right for their home. Here’s a practical look at the options and what actually drives the decision.

Why Houston Homes Choose K-Style Gutters: Roof Concepts Construction

K-style gutters — with a flat back, decorative front profile, and flat bottom — are the default in the Houston market. They handle high-volume drainage efficiently, work with all standard downspout configurations, and are available in every color. Five-inch K-style is standard for most single-story homes. Six-inch is appropriate for larger homes, steep roof pitches, or homes with limited downspout locations that concentrate drainage.

Half-Round

Half-round gutters have a smooth, rounded trough profile that complements specific architectural styles — Craftsman, colonial, and traditional designs where the K-style profile looks out of place. They’re slightly more expensive to install and require different hanger systems, but they drain cleanly and are less prone to debris accumulation in the trough. Available in aluminum, copper, and galvanized steel. Copper half-round is a premium option that’s common on higher-end custom homes in The Woodlands and River Oaks-adjacent neighborhoods.

Box Gutters

Box gutters — square profile, typically larger volume — are used on commercial applications and some larger residential rooflines. They handle extremely high drainage volumes and are often integrated into the roof edge rather than surface-mounted. Less common in standard Houston residential construction.

The Installation Question That Matters More Than Style

Regardless of gutter style, the most important question is how they’re attached. Most gutter installers in Houston fasten through the drip edge — which creates a moisture pathway onto the fascia. RCC detaches and resets gutters as part of every roof replacement, fastening to the fascia correctly with the drip edge sealed underneath. That detail prevents fascia rot regardless of which gutter style you choose. Schedule an inspection here.
