Before Houston Storm Season: Roof Preparation That Actually Matters
Before the Storms: Roof Preparation for Houston’s Weather Season
Houston’s storm season doesn’t announce itself. The spring hail corridor runs through the metro beginning in March. The Gulf becomes active for tropical systems from June through November. The window to prepare your roof before meaningful weather risk arrives is January through February — and most homeowners miss it entirely.
What Pre-Season Preparation Actually Looks Like
Start with an inspection. A documented inspection in early spring gives you current condition data before storm season, identifies repair items that can be addressed on a non-emergency timeline, and establishes a baseline that matters if you file a storm damage claim later in the year. An adjuster reviewing a claim from a roof that had a documented pre-storm inspection showing it was in good condition is a very different situation than one with no prior documentation.
Address pipe boots proactively. Neoprene pipe boots deteriorate on a predictable timeline — 10 to 15 years from installation. If your roof is in that age range, replacing them before they fail is cheaper and less disruptive than emergency repair after the first significant rain event of the season.
Clean your gutters and downspouts. Debris from winter accumulates in gutters through February. Going into spring storm season with restricted drainage means the first intense rain event tests your gutter system at its weakest point.
Check your attic ventilation. Walk the attic and verify soffits are clear, the ridge vent is open, and there’s no insulation blocking airflow. A well-ventilated attic performs better under the thermal load of Houston summers and contributes to shingle longevity throughout storm season.
